Dr. Marsha Burnett-Webster
(Political Activist Focusing on Public Education)
"As a community and political activist, and given my background in education, I focus on issues peculiar to the Texas State Board of Education."
State Board of Education
The State Board of Education (SBOE) sets policies and standards for Texas public schools. The primary responsibilities include:

-
Setting curriculum standards,
-
Reviewing and adopting instructional materials,
-
Establishing graduation requirements,
-
Overseeing the Texas Permanent School Fund,
-
Appointing board members to military reservation and special school districts,
-
Providing final review of rules proposed by the State Board for Educator Certification, and
-
Reviewing the commissioner's proposed award of new charter schools, with authority to veto a recommended applicant.

SBOE - 10
The State Board of Education (SBOE) is composed of 15 single member districts. When I ran for the SBOE, I ran for the District 10 position, which consists of the following counties: Austin, Bastrop, Bell, Burleson, Burnet, Falls, Fayette, Freestone, Lee, Leon, Limestone, Madison, Milam, Robertson, Waller, Washington, Williamson and part of Travis.
My Issues & Priorities
Within the framework of SBOE responsibilities, my top priorities include:

-
Curriculum Standards. Ensure our educational standards are aligned with college and work expectations; are clear, understandable, and consistent; and include rigorous application of knowledge through critical thinking.
-
School Safety. Implement standards and protocols stressing school safety as an integral component of the learning environment.
-
Student Testing & School Accountability Ratings. Schools are not businesses and they must not be expected to operate as such. Focus testing and accountability on student needs and not on arbitrary mandates.

-
Charter Schools/Vouchers. If charter schools receive any public funding (which I oppose), then they must adhere to the same standards as public schools.
